about

I was introduced to the unique and blissed out music of Khruangbin all the way back in 2014, via an online mixtape I'd stumbled on. At that exact time, I was in the middle of the first of many trips to Laos (infinite love and thanks to Mrs Peace, naturally), and when 'A Calf Born In Winter' came on, we knew we'd made a sincerely awesome discovery. The Thai influence fit in incredibly with the Lao surroundings, and all the insane Thai music we'd been digging for along the way, and the slow sweetness synchronised amazingly with the lazy heat and relaxed nature of the daily buzz around us.

After grabbing the first album 'The Universe Smiles Upon You', which became an instant regular rotation (and continues to be!), I knew that it was my duty to do SOMETHING with all this luscious music. I had this with Miles Davis, before I made that 'Sons Of Bitches' mix... It was like it wasn't enough to just listen to it - I had to tear it up and do something with it! Well, time passed very quickly and along came 'Con Todo El Mundo', their follow up album, and that was it. I knew what had to be done. With all the releases along the way, I always felt like there was just too much to use, and too many tracks to put on mixtapes and whatnot, so I decided that the best thing to do would be to construct some kind of beat-tape project, using the discography as it stands presently. This was back in February 2018, while I was a month into my 'Present' project (which was based around making a one minute track and video each day for the whole year) - so it felt like I might not have a ton of time to do what I wanted to...

Since the 'Present' project naturally reached its conclusion, I've had a little time to get on with this particular project (until I get the physical version of 'Present' done which will be its own mad universe!), and here it is - I call it a 'Block Party Beat Tape', and it will probably be clear as to which parts of this that applies to. But for the most part, it's edits, remixes, chops, and blends of many elements of the Khruangbin discography. Of COURSE I wanted to use it all, but that could have stretched out forever and I wanted to be somewhat focused. So here it as it stands. And as always, I truly hope you enjoy what I've done with their music.

Of course - if you're not familiar with Khruangbin, you would be well advised to explore their abundant archives:

Their music is wonderful, a psychedelic and gorgeous blend of Thai, 60's Shadow-style guitar goodness, funk and rock. There is so much more besides but you can define them in your own time. Or not. Maybe just appreciate them without genre names. Far purer that way... But do check em out.

It goes without saying that this is very much a love letter to a band whose music I thoroughly enjoy and appreciate, and was made very much in the spirit of promotion and spreading the good word. I hope this is clear and that word has indeed been spread!
