VOLUME 2

This is a huge collection of early MPC programming practice which dates back to probably 1999 (maybe 2000), when I was acquainting myself with the MPC2000. This was all very much before I installed a compact flash drive in there, so everything was all saved on Zip discs (hate hate hate those) which would sound like they were about to self destruct upon loading, but also crash incredibly frequently. Using those was a lesson in backing up. I don't wish to be negative but some media is obsolete for very understandable reasons.

In here though you'll also find some more up to date bits which aren't all minidisc. I'll try and note some of them to explain more, so keep an eye on that! For the most part though, this is formative stuff. Some of it is me using 12"s to sample from, in a kind of MPC re-edit fashion just to get used to the language of the 'step' programming. Some beats are my own digs, some are from break records, and not everything is dusty digging treasure - by this I mean, don't expect to hear that old rare shit you've NEVER heard... On one of them I use the original from 93 Til Infinity (that why I call it 'Hubris' - basically, my own hubris of sampling that - it wasn't for any reason other than seeing what it felt like). So just to set that table. I wasn't trying to prove anything. I was really just getting tricksy with edits, but also to a fault - I sometimes got SO caught up trying to wring out every possible permutation of the edits that I would draw out a beat for 10 minutes when I could really crystallise that into like 2 minutes or less these days. But eh - the fun moments of learning...

I can still mess with the MPC, for sure. It's a lovely machine and I love getting out of the computer. But it's not really a go-to anymore. I get very similar enjoyment from other programming methods. BUT - place the MPC2000XL in front of me on a Sunday morning with an oatmilk flat white and a croissant and I'll program the fuck out of a beat tape for ya.
