MINIDISC ERA • Untitled Instrumental Movements (layered mix • 2000-ish)

by Buddy Peace

This was part of my very very early 'layering' setup. Here was the order of operations:
• Record a live mix on to minidisc straight out of the mixer
• Play that recording through a channel of the mixer, mix over that, and record the output to another minidisc
• Continue as required...
What was quite cool about minidiscs was the weird digital degradation you'd get when you layered things up too much. I didn't go nuts (or if I did, I won't post those mixes on Bandcamp, let's say!), but it was a fun way of making the most out of two turntables and a mixer.
I didn't master or compress any of these multi-layered mixes or minidisc recordings. They're mostly straight out the phono outputs of the MPC or Vestax 07 Pro. I ran through a bunch of different minidisc recorders back then too - they were very expendable and unreliable, and basically worked for a year or so, usually less, and then you'd have to replace them. Minidiscs too were really shitty for the most part. I'm amazed the ones I have now still work to be honest...!
This mix is solid intrumentals, all off the top of the head but with definite sections that seemed to happen through the randomness. It's a nice listen, and definitely has some killer 12"s on there. It was all vinyl, all turntable, and no after-edits or anything after that. Just layers of mixes from the minidisc.
Thanks kindly for listening. This feels SO old now. As do I.
Bless ya XXX
