about

Numero Group is a label that I've been a crazy huge fan of for a good long while now... They release everything from heavy, gritty and raw funk and deep soul albums and compilations to the lushest, warmest and bittersweetest Americana and acoustic music, with a huge area of musical terrain in between. Pretty much everything they've put out has hit me as a producer and as a ravenous, voracious listener.

They released a compilation around April 2017 called 'Private Yacht', which fell under their compilation series 'Seafaring Strangers', which draws together obscure artists in various contexts and provides a gorgeous selection of music that rapidly hits you as the best stuff you've probably never heard of... This one in particular is based around that unique style of what I guess you could call 'adult pop', a strangely addictive style of soft rock and pop that weaves together all kinds of musical influences but feels like a kind of bizzaro alternative to late 70's/early 80's chart music. Some of the tracks on the compilation struck me as being very much like what my Dad used to play in the car when I was a kid, so there's a nice, rich seam of nostalgia going on there too! Even thinking about Dire Straits can give me a little lump in my throat to this day... Anyway - a lot of the tracks actually bump pretty hard, and there are some really cool moments including some John Martyn-ish goodness, rare groove type situations and some sweet cosmic boogie scenes in there too.

Here I've taken a little selection of the compilation and made my own versions of the tracks, in a kind of non-stop beat-tape style, heavy on the heat and chops and focusing on certain elements of the tracks to extend them and make my own piece of work out of them. I very much hope you enjoy, and as a member of the yacht-less community (of which I'm led to believe there are many), this gave me a chance to vicariously feel that sea spray, that ocean lick and that salty breeze and for a moment, there I was, captain of my own vessel.

Sail with me won't ya, it's a proper headnodder of a cruise. You'll dig it.
